Floor plan

Lighting Plan

Opening Sequence Treatment : Elizabeth's Diary

Treatment: Our idea started off with a girl who had the power to be able to kill people through what she writes in her folder. It involved a character called Elizabeth who was bullied at school and ended up killing the people who bullied her through this mysterious power she has.Our Opening sequence involves Elizabeth (acted by Petrie) in the build up to her death. At the end of the sequence, we see her commit suicide by hanging herself. The sequence will be filmed in the film studio but is set in a barn / warehouse. The reason that we decided to shoot in the film studio is because we could set it up to be however we desired, and if we were not happy with the set, we could either change it on the morning of the shoot, or edit it to look different in the post production stage. We decided that we wanted to make it look like a barn because we wanted a location where in real life, someone would be unlikely to be disturbed. The barn also has some significance in the film later on.Our sequence generates tension through the build up to the climax where she kills herself. The tension is created through the audience not knowing what is going to happen, until it happens. The sound used of the footsteps, and voice, and the suffering is also used to create tension. We have tried to make the sequence as simple, but effective as possible, so we only need one actress, who is Petrie Kimber playing then role of Elizabeth. We also only need to have four main props. The most important one is the diary, as the whole sequence and movie is centered around this. Then we need the noose and stall as we are shooting a hanging scene and we are also going to need hay, to create the set. We are going to need to use Genie gr12 mechanical crane to be able to achieve all of the high angle shots.

Cast List

Our Opening sequence is about singe character ( Elizabeth Carter), we have decided to use Petri Kimber as our main character as she posseses the characteristics which we would use to depict imagery to vivid effect, such as her natural dark hair and eyes, and with the appropriate make-up and coustume, she would be perfect for the role of Elizabeth Carter, as she is a teenage girl with a ' dark' personality.
Petri Kimber also posses commended acting skills and talent to help bring the character Elizabeth Carter to life in a way that the audience and experience imagery to vivid effect.

What Kind Of Instituation Would Produce Our Film?

Characteristics of Hollywood Thrillers include stories that employ suspense in order to maintain interest, but thrillers exploit that particular narrative quality as much as possible. Main characters in thrillers are placed in menacing situations from which escape seems impossible. Themes often include terrorism, political conspiracy, love triangles that lead to murder, etc. Often the heroes are ordinary folk who are drawn into danger unknowingly or unwillingly. More often than not, the heroes of these movies are men, but occasionally women take a lead roll (think Linda Hamilton in The Terminator).
In Comparison to the stereotypical characteristics of Hollywood Thrillers,Our thriller depicts some similar traits such as the fact that the main character can be juxtaposed to be a woman ( as Elizabeth Carter is the protagonist of our thriller), our themes include student relationship towards each other that leads to murder, and our main character is placed in menacing situations from which escape seems impossible leading to her death, thus i think our film has the potential to be produced by the Hollywood industry if developed further and have a-list professionals star in it.

Target Audience

Target Audiences are set to focus on different groups: Adults, teens, tweens and children. It is essential to become familiar with your target market, their habits, behaviors, likes, and dislikes. Markets differ in size, assortment, geographic scale, locality, types of communities, and in the different types of merchandise sold and because of the many variations included in a market it is essential, since you cannot accommodate everyone’s preferences, to know exactly who you are marketing to and the specific fondness of that market. To better become acquainted with the ins and outs of your designated target market a market analysis must be completed. A market analysis is a documented examination of a market that is used to enlighten a business’s preparation activities surrounding decisions of inventory, purchase, work force expansion/contraction, facility expansion, purchases of capital equipment, promotional activities, and to improve daily operations and many other aspects of a business. Once you have done your market analysis, in detail; describe your preferred target market. Your description should include the information you have gathered during your market analysis.

Because our opening sequence is a Thriller piece, our target audience is inevitably going to consist of teenagers and young adults who can relate to the content of this thriller as it deals with common issues in the environment amongst young adults and teenagers such as depression, social discrimination and psychological and physical trauma induced by bullying.

Also, thrillers are types of films known to promote intense excitement, suspense, a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety, and nerve-wracking tension. Thriller and suspense films are virtually synonymous and interchangeable categorizations, with similar characteristics and features.
If the genre is to be defined strictly, a genuine thriller is a film that rentlessly pursues a single-minded goal - to provide thrills and keep the audience cliff-hanging at the 'edge of their seats' as the plot builds towards a climax. The tension usually arises when the main character(s) is placed in a menacing situation or mystery, or an escape or dangerous mission from which escape seems impossible. Life itself is threatened, usually because the principal character is unsuspecting or unknowingly involved in a dangerous or potentially deadly situation. Plots of thrillers involve characters which come into conflict with each other or with outside forces - the menace is sometimes abstract or shadowy and those sort of things interest teenagers and young adults.

Account Of Research Sources

During My personal research, Scott and i thought of the perfect example for the bit of our thriller that might include flashbacks, this idea came from Rihanna's Music Video - Russian Roulette
,where you can see flashbalacks that last a few seconds throughout the video , to get an idea of what happend in the past that lead to the present situation/ mind state of the main femal character, which is almost the same kind of effect we would like to create in out thriller to give the audience a brief sense of understanding , in terms of the characters past.

Storyboarding Of Elizabeth's Diary ( Thriller)

Once a concept or script is written for a film or animation, the next step is to make a storyboard. A storyboard visually tells the story of an animation panel by panel, kind of like a comic book.

For our group storyboard i have taken up the role of drawing in the pictures and i got to write up the storyboard for the 13th to 16th shot, Each group meber took on a role , for example alex edited the written content to make sure everyone's input would match the general concept trying to be achived.

I personally belive that Storyboarding is no substitute for filming and editing, but it's a very useful tool for getting my group members and i to plan and visualise our ideas and to ensure that we do make use of a variety of shots and angles.

First Group Meeting-Elizabeth's Diary ( Discussion)

Our group got together In Class to discus our ideas for our thriller "Elisabeth's diary". We discussed the roles each of our group members were going to take, decided on our leading actress and discussed the various props we would be likely to use and we decided that we could get them at the party shop down in Guildford.
We also decided that i would be drawing the pictures for the storyboard.
Our must difficult decision was figuring out our locations, but after a discussion with Scott, we decided for the establishing shot we we would use a barn near school and also the studio for the interior shots.

Thriller Synopsis of Elizabeth's Diary

The thriller is based on the character Elizabeth Carter, who is a loner and constantly gets bullied by her peers, Davina Thorne, Alex Hall, Ross Gordon and Tinuke Kola-Abiola. Elizabeth Carter is constantly being bullied at school due to her autistic disability. She is an incredibly keen writer and reverts to her black diary for comfort in expressing her feelings about her peers.

Suddenly two of the four bullies die, in horrific ways. Elizabeth discovers that the deaths match the way she wanted them to die according to the writing in her diary. Once she discovers this, she turns suicidal and delusional.

A few days after the deaths, Elizabeth is announced dead. An investigation is put into her death where they discover she committed suicide.

Just when everyone thinks everything is solved, they find a new picture in the diary, and another bully dies. Once again, an investigation is put into this, with the same investigation team. They eventually link all the evidence back to the forth bully, and then the twist that it was her all along, unfolds.

Davina, the forth bully is then announced missing, and is nowhere to be found.

Horror

Horror films are unsettling films designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience.

Horror films effectively center on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and strange and alarming events. They deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares, our vulnerability, our alienation, our revulsions, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death and dismemberment, loss of identity, or fear of sexuality.

Whatever dark, primitive, and revolting traits that simultaneously attract and repel us are featured in the horror genre. Horror films are often combined with science fiction when the menace or monster is related to a corruption of technology, or when Earth is threatened by aliens. The fantasy and supernatural film genres are not synonymous with the horror genre, although thriller films may have some relation when they focus on the revolting and horrible acts of the killer/madman.

Horror films are also known as chillers, scary movies, spookfests, and the macabre.

Thriller

Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film, television, and gaming that includes numerous and often overlapping sub-genres , some popular examples include :

1)Action thriller: In which the work often features a race against the clock, contains lots of violence, and an obvious antagonist. These films usually contain large amounts of guns, explosions, and large elaborate set pieces for the action to take place. These films often have elements of mystery films and crime films but these elements take a backseat to action. Notable examples are the James Bond films, The Transporter, and the Jason Bourne novels and films.

2)
Psychological thriller: In which (until the often violent resolution) the conflict between the main characters is mental and emotional, rather than physical. The Alfred Hitchcock films Suspicion, Shadow of a Doubt and Strangers on a Train and David Lynch's bizarre and influential Blue Velvet are notable examples of the type, as is The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith(who also wrote Strangers) and The Good Son starring Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin.

3) Spy thriller In which the hero is generally a government agent who must take violent action against agents of a rival government or (in recent years) terrorists. Examples include From Russia, with Love by Ian Fleming, The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum, and television series such as Mission: Impossible and 24 (the latter demonstrating a break from the norm by Robert Ludlum, as it is as much a psychological thriller as a spy thriller).

Thrillers often take place wholly or partly in exotic settings such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions, or high seas. The heroes in most thrillers are frequently "hard men" accustomed to danger: law enforcement officers, spies, soldiers, seamen or aviators

Thrillers often overlap with mystery stories, but are distinguished by the structure of their plots. In a thriller, the hero must thwart the plans of an enemy, rather than uncover a crime that has already happened; while a murder mystery would be spoiled by a premature disclosure of the murderer's identity, in a thriller the identity of a murderer or other villain is typically known all along. Thrillers also occur on a much grander scale: the crimes that must be prevented are serial or mass murder, terrorism, assassination, or the overthrow of governments. Jeopardy and violent confrontations are standard plot elements. While a mystery climaxes when the mystery is solved, a thriller climaxes when the hero finally defeats the villain, saving his own life and often the lives of others. In thrillers influenced by film noir and tragedy, the compromised hero is often killed in the process.

Preliminary Task

Our Premliminary task was filmed in the old media room above the theater studio. Our Set was very dull and had white walls and discarded furniture as clearly there had been some pre-revonations going on in the old media room. This atmosphere was perfect as it suited the kind of look we need to initiate the theme of mystery in the storyline . Davina's role was to do continuity, to make sure everything was the same in each shot. She watched for small things like which hand the actor used to pick up the suitcase and how many steps she took, so that it would be easier when it came round to editing. We had to add lightining to the room; we used two lights. We did this to try and make it so there was no shadow but we did not have sufficient space to make it completely without shadow. We wanted to have it bright in the actors faces in an high intensity interview type fashion. I do not think it was that effective because we did not have all proper stands and could not the the angle exactly right.Alex was operating the camera in are group. She set up the camera and then both Davina and I checked after to make sure it was correct. After each time we moved the tripod and camera we made sure it was rebubbled. Davina made sure that in each frame you could not see the lighting equipment or our shadows. I used all the angles that were given to us on the story board, and when we added our own we made sure that they added to the story and we not completely random. When filming we did it all in a specific order e.g. shooting all wide shots first, then all over the sholdershots and not in chronological order. Each time we shot from each angle we did the whole scene. At no point did we cross the 180 degree line, we made sure we did not so that the image would not appear flipped to the viewer.I was the director, at the start of each shot I called out, "stand by" the others then responded saying "standing by" to let me know they were ready. After that I called out"roll camera", Alex would then reply "camera rolling" when the camera was ready and finally to start the scene i gave the final call which was 'Action'

Introduction To Photoshop

On our very first Photoshop Lesson we were taught by Matt,
It was a Very Interactive and Exciting Class as we were spilt into groups and Had to take photographs around the school.

We Learnt How To Edit Our Photographs Using Difffrent Tools Such As :-
1) Rectangular Marquee Tool (M): It is used for making selection on the image (objects) on any active layer.
2) Dodge Tool (O): Used for making images lighter (And Burn tool makes the opposite - darker)

3) Clone Stamp Tool (S): Used for selecting a source and copying (drawing) it in another place

4)
Crop Tool (C): Used for cropping images

Horror Movie Poster Deconstruction

The title of my media project (Horror film movie poster) is called ‘EXIT’.
In the photograph taken you can see the protagonist (Naomi played by Kim Kardashian) fingers covered in blood, reaching for the drain which obviously she cannot fit into and thus, cannot make her ‘exit’ from her unfortunate situation.
The drain in the picture is the main signifier of the title ‘EXIT’. To also give a dark and eerie feel to the drain because it is the main signifier of the title, using Photoshop (the burn tool) I decided to darken the holes and the paces in between the plaques of wood to Give a dried up feeling as the skull in the photograph, also Naomi’s fingers to signify suffering and excruciating pain.
To have additional vivid imagery the leaf that is dried up (on top of the drain) is supposed to signify death as when a body is without life the flesh decays and dries away. You can also see the juxtaposition between the ‘life’ in Naomi’s hands (even though they are dying up).
With the text type I used for the title ‘EXIT’, I chose green as most exit signs are bright as they draw attention just as I intended too with my potential viwers, draw their attention just as I intended to do my potential viewers.Aslo in terms of what the title depicts, exit signs always lead the way out but in this case a sort of irony is created as the victims cant get out of their pre-set death traps. Also there is juxtaposition between the leaf and the colours of the tile ‘EXIT’ as leafs are meant to be a rich green colour, bright and look healthy but in this photograph it is the total opposite as the leaf has dried up and is dark, just like the stereotypical font colours of horror movies.
And to the more obvious, considering semiotics, the skull and blood are all in association or are signifier of death which is the main theme of the poster. Also in association with the themes the darkness can be represented by the darker side of the poster (top left) which is one of the ‘hot spots’ to draw attention to the themes of darkness. Also the key signifier (skull) has been darkened around the eyes and the teeth/mouth area which are the human features on a face that show the most emotions to create vivid effect to the theme of darkness and also evil emotions and death.
In my poster I tried to also use obvious iconic signs (signs which actually look like what they represent) such as the title ‘EXIT’ which is meant to look like an exit sign and in addition Indexical signs (which have a connection to what they represent) such as the blood which sort of resemble veins that represent strains or uncomfortable force acting on the hands/arms.

Also the shot types of the pictures was a close up of the skull was to ‘stare death in the face’ as that is what the picture of the skull depicts .This shot is normally used to show close emotion in the face and I tried to give the view an insight to what staring at death would feel like (literally), by using visual content.
In addition to creating imagery to vivid effect, I positioned the title at the bottom for 3 reasons:-
1) It is positioned at a ‘Hot Spot’ to grab attention.
2) Because I intended to allow the viewers imaginations ‘run wild’ right before they saw what the movie was all about to sort of captivate their thoughts and make them eventually want to see more.
3) Lastly, because a typical ‘EXIT’ sign is always the last thing you see before you leave a place, and I wanted them to feel the same way as their imagination left that piece of art/media (the photograph).
